Faster case registration and report calculation in Labstudio 3.0.52
Laboratories that register large cases have had a long wait.
A lab case of 50 or 100 samples, each with a full set of tests, can mean more than 3,000 test lines, and each line was saved to the database on its own. That cost about three round trips per test.
Calculating the report had the same problem. Every calculated line searched the whole report for the values it needed, then saved itself separately. With five or more calculations per sample, some depending on the results of others, the work grew much faster than the case did.
In one real case, 98 samples and 3,324 tests took 45 minutes just to register, before any calculation started. On that basis a 50-sample case took over 20 minutes and a 100-sample case close to 50. A 3,780-line report then needed almost 4 minutes to calculate.
What we changed
We rebuilt both steps.
Registration now adds samples in about 20 bulk steps instead of roughly 10,000 separate saves.
The calculation engine finds each value directly, works through the whole report in memory, and saves once at the end.
The results
- The 3,780-line report that took 223 seconds now calculates in 3.5 seconds.
- Across nine real client cases, total calculation time dropped from 296 seconds to 6.
- Every result matched the old engine exactly.
You can see the progress
A big case still involves a lot of work, so we also wanted users to see how far along it is.
The progress window now shows which of the six registration steps is running, with a progress bar and sample count while samples are added, and a running clock.
A large case no longer looks like it has stopped.
Availability
These changes are in version 3.0.52 and benefit all our current and future LIMS clients, whatever their sample volumes or calculation profiles.
The faster calculation engine has been live on our servers since 11 September 2026 for every laboratory. The faster registration and the new progress window come with the 3.0.52 desktop update.
